Many years ago prior to becoming a makeup artist or an esthetician, a face primer was not on my list of must haves. However, a girl doesn’t know, what a girl doesn’t know. Now it’s an absolute must have!
A good makeup primer is one of the most important items a girl can have in her makeup bag. Although primers can be costly, it has benefits that much outweigh the cost.
So just what exactly does a face and eye primer do? Oh, let me count the ways….
Smoother Appearance: Foundation and powder can sometimes emphasize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A primer smooths fine lines and prevent makeup from settling into the creases. It can also help to keep skin moisturized and protect the skin from the sometimes harsh chemicals within products. It seems to make it velvety soft, which enhances the smooth effects it has on your makeup appearance.
Reduce Redness: A good makeup primer will help to even out a skin tone and won’t irritate the skin – which means less foundation will be needed to create a “perfect finish”.
Seals Pores: I’ve never had large pores, but if you choose a liquid foundation, you already know no matter how small your pores are a liquid foundation can make them look more visible. A primer takes care of that by sealing pores and creating almost a blanket over them.
Anti-Aging: Most makeup primers don’t really have anti-aging properties, though some may include anti-aging ingredients. Yet what they do is make your skin appear much more youthful since they smooth out fine lines. This creates a more youthful appearance and reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Always try to find a primer that is all naturally based and free of chemicals and cheap fillers.
Makeup Stays On Longer: The main reason for using a primer is because it helps your makeup stay on longer. Primers help decrease sweating through the pores, which makes your makeup stay in place longer. They also act as a natural shield for dust, water and debris that might make your makeup wear off.
Lessens Acne Appearance: If you suffer from acne, makeup primers can help lessen the appearance. While they don’t help fight acne, they do help conceal it better and more subtly than concealer, though I’d suggest still using that after you apply primer.
So which primer is best? That’s a bit difficult to answer, if not impossible. However, I can tell you for the past two weeks I’ve been using Moodstruck Glorious Face and Eye Primer, by Younique (This primer is also full of antioxidants and helps to retain moisture). It is actually what prompted to me to write on this subject. Initially I was really liking this primer. Unfortunately, due to my (dry) sensitive skin it has a tendency to cause breakouts.
That said, for you it may work just fine. However, if you too have sensitive skin you may find that Younique’s primer not be your best choice.
